Red Bull have warned they could quit F1 unless the sport’s regulations are overhauled in the wake of Mercedes' crushing victory in the Australian GP.

Mateschitz said Red Bull's future in F1 was more "to do with sportsmanship and political influence" than finance.

He said: "In these issues there is a clear limit to what we can accept."

He also referred to the "inappropriate politicisation" of the sport.

The former world champions finished the season-opening event a lap down on runaway leaders Mercedes, who have dominated the sport since the advent of F1’s new power-centric turbo era.

According to Helmut Marko, an advisor to Dietrich Mateschitz, the Red Bull magnate who owns both the eponymous outfit and its junior team Toro Rosso, the group could withdraw from the sport at the end of the year.

Red Bull have appealed against Ricciardo's exclusion from the season-opening race in Melbourne for using more fuel than is allowed under new rules. The appeal is to be heard on 14 April.

The Australian Daniel Ricciardo, 24, was excluded because his car was using more fuel than allowed and his team refused to reduce the flow when informed.

Red Bull say the fuel-flow meters provided by the sport's governing body, the FIA, had shown "inconsistencies" and that they and engine supplier Renault believe they were in "full compliance".

Formula 1 engines must have a fuel-flow rate of no more than 100kg/h at full throttle.

It is the first year of a new engine formula, which has seen the introduction of 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids with a limited fuel allowance.

The fuel-flow rate in the engine is measured by a sensor provided by an external supplier. Teams also measure their engines' fuel-flow at the injectors.

Any irregularities of readings are analysed by the FIA and, if necessary, teams are given a correction to apply.

Teams are obliged to follow the FIA's guidelines and to use the data from the official sensor to interpret their fuel-flow.

Stewards said Red Bull had been given the "opportunity to be within compliance" during the race, which ended with Ricciardo crossing the line in second behind Mercedes' Nico Rosberg, but chose not to.

Red Bull said it refused because "inconsistencies with the FIA fuel-flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane".

Teams were warned that rule violations would lead to disqualifications.

Meanwhile Ricciardo says his disqualification will never detract from the sensation of standing on the podium for the first time in front of his own fans.

"I did a good job in the car and I got to stand on the Australian Grand Prix podium, and no-one's taking away the sensation of doing that," Ricciardo told the Red Bull website.

"What happens next is outside of my ability to control, but honestly, I'd rather it went down like this than have retired from the race with a mechanical problem.

"I'll take a podium and a subsequent disqualification over that any day of the week."

Mateschitz has great influence in motorsport. He owns two F1 teams and has been instrumental in keeping the world rally championship alive through his company's investment.

His remarks were made in an interview with the Austrian newspaper Kurier, in which he was asked under what circumstances Red Bull may end its involvement in F1.

He replied: "The question is not so much whether it makes economic sense but the reasons would be to do with sportsmanship, political influence, and so on.

"In these issues there is a clear limit to what we can accept."

Mateschitz did not expand on his answer but Red Bull's involvement in F1 revolves around its two teams, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso. It is also promoting its own race for the first time this year, with the return of the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.

Asked if he felt his acceptable "limit" had been exceeded as a result of F1's new rules and Ricciardo's disqualification, Mateschitz said: "The team has lodged a protest. The fuel-flow sensor, which was given to the teams by the federation, gave divergent readings and it is inaccurate. We can prove the exact amount of fuel flow and this was always within the limits."

Governing body, the FIA, warned Red Bull in Australia that all teams had been told they must stick to the readings given by the official sensor.

Red Bull ignored the readings and ran the car according to readings given by their own measurements.

The FIA has said that these can be used if it feels a sensor has a problem, but this permission was not given to Red Bull in Melbourne.

Mateschitz also criticised the new format of F1, both in terms of the use of a fuel limit and in the sound produced by the turbo hybrid engines, which are much quieter than last year's naturally aspirated V8s.

"You have to make F1 like it used to be - the top discipline of motorsports," he said.

"F1 is not there to set new records in fuel consumption, nor to make it possible to have a whispered conversation during a race.

"It is absurd to race a lap seconds slower than last year. GP2 partially provides more racing and fighting and almost equal lap times as F1 with a small fraction of the budget."

Red Bull's four-year dominance of F1 has been ended by the new formula, which has lessened the effect of aerodynamics - in which the team excelled - and brought back engine performance as a differentiator.

Red Bull's engine partner, Renault, is significantly behind Mercedes in both outright power and fuel efficiency.

Mateschitz insisted Red Bull would be able to challenge the factory Mercedes team before long.

"The work with Renault continues around the clock," he said. "In the next two or three weeks we will make a big step and reduce the gap to Mercedes. There are 18 races still to go. We will be back."

Marko's statements come the day after team principal Christian Horner called on the FIA for an equalization of the regulations following Mercedes' crushing one-two start to the season in the Australian Grand Prix, spearheaded by Lewis Hamilton.

Horner further suggested fans will turn away from F1 if Mercedes are not reined in as the German manufacturing giant has now won 17 of the last 20 races.

Horner's comments drew short shrift from Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff who told his rivals to simply stop bleating and get on with trying to do a better job if they are to catch up.

“If you come into Formula 1 and you try to eat each other, or perform on the highest level, and equalisation is what you need after the first race, and you cry out after the first race, it’s not how we’ve done things in the past and not how we’ve moaned,” Wolff said.

Now Marko has added his voice, which will likely be viewed as sour grapes given Red Bull's slide after winning four consecutive drivers' and constructors' titles from 2010 to 2013.

For now, Marko has made clear there is growing disillusionment with what has transpired since the arrival of the current power units at the start of last season.

"We will evaluate the situation again as every year and look into costs and revenues," said Marko, speaking to Austrian media.

"If we are totally dissatisfied we could contemplate an F1 exit. The danger is there that Mateschitz loses his passion for F1."

Although Red Bull were the only team to win a race other than Mercedes last season - with Daniel Ricciardo triumphant on three occasions - the Milton Keynes-based marque has struggled with power-unit supplier Renault.

Notably at Melbourne's Albert Park the team were down on power compared to Mercedes and Ferrari, with Horner making his displeasure clear post race.

Slating the 1.6-litre V6 turbo-charged systems, Marko added: "These power units are the wrong solution for F1.

"We would say this even if Renault were in the lead. The technical rules are not understandable, much too complicated, and too expensive.

"We are governed by an engineers' formula. We wanted cost reduction too, but it is not happening like this.

"A designer like Adrian Newey is castrated by this engine formula. These rules will kill the sport."

Newey, the most decorated designer in F1 history, has previously expressed his dissatisfaction with the regulations and is taking a less hands-on role this season as he adds his experience to Sir Ben Ainslie's America's Cup bid.

“It wasn’t the most exciting race. After the start I was able to stay with Nasr, but I wasn’t able to get
close enough to make the move. We finished the race and got some points which was positive, and
there are things we can learn; I think on paper sixth was the best for us today. It was a shame for Dany, I feel for him I hope we have a smoother week end in Malaysia. In terms of where we need to improve, the main issue is the drivability and the power, there are pretty big chunks that we know we need to find there. Beyond that it’s hard, as with the chassis itself I don’t think we’ve really been able to test it to its limits yet due to the other issues we’ve had. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but we have got a lot of information from this weekend which will help us ahead of Malaysia.”

DANIIL KVYAT, Finish Position: DNF,
Start Position: DNS (qualified 13th)
“I had to stop on the way to the grid as we had a problem; I think it was something to do with the gearbox. Obviously it’s not a nice feeling to watch the other drivers on track while you are here. From now on, it can only get better so we are staying positive. I have confidence in the team. We have another race in two weeks and will be pushing as hard as we can ahead of that.”

CHRISTIAN HORNER, Team Principal:
“A frustrating grand prix for us. It was disappointing to lose Daniil before the race started with a gearbox problem. Daniel did everything he could with the tools that he had. It unfortunately demonstrates that there’s a quite a lot of ground to make up, so sixth place was the best we could manage on a rather difficult day.”

THIERRY SALVI, Renault : “A very hard first race for the team. From the opening session of the weekend we’ve faced a number of issues, and for sure are not where we wanted to be in reliability and performance. This has cost lap time and points. The mapping and software need to be looked at in detail to give better driveability in the coming races. We’ve got to be realistic about what we can achieve but we can definitely move forward from what’s been a frustrating weekend overall. We are as disappointed as anyone but also resolved to fix these issues in Malaysia.”

Red Bull is contracted to stay in the sport until 2020 under its commercial agreement with F1, making a sudden exit unlikely or extremely costly. But Marko argues that the current regulations, which brought an end to Red Bull's run of four consecutive championships last year, are killing the sport.

Wolff lost his temper, “I think ‘just get your f***ing head down, work hard and try to sort it out’,” said the Austrian.

He then suggested Marko and Horner should take their ‘wailing’ out of the F1 paddock and to a famous wall in Jerusalem.

Mercedes team chairman Niki Lauda also hit back at the post-race complaining, “Those who continuously criticise have no idea what they are talking about.”

“We are all here to bring the maximum in technological innovation, the best car, the best engine, the best drivers and try to win the grand prix,” Lauda told the Austrian news agency APA.

“That is the goal in formula one. If others are here because of other things, they don’t know what they’re talking about,” he insisted.

Lauda said there was nothing wrong with the image presented by F1 on Sunday, “Ferrari is back on the podium, so how is that bad for Formula 1? Everything comes from Red Bull because they’re annoyed their car doesn’t work.”

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has backed Red Bull in its calls on FIA to act on Mercedes' superiority.

Formule One supremo insists it is not about trying to stop Mercedes winning but simply allowing other manufacturers greater flexibility to make the title race more competitive

Ecclestone reckons the rules would allow the FIA to make changes if it deems Mercedes has an unfair advantage.

"They are absolutely 100 percent right," Ecclestone told Reuters about the need to equalise performance.

"There is a rule that I think [former FIA president] Max [Mosley] put in when he was there that in the event...that a particular team or engine supplier did something magic - which Mercedes have done - the FIA can level up things.

"They have done a first class job which everybody acknowledges."

"What we should have done was frozen the Mercedes engine and leave everybody else to do what they want so they could have caught up."

Ecclestone also downplayed suggestions that Red Bull owner Dieter Mateschitz wants to leave Formula One.

Red Bull made a dismal start to the season with Daniel Ricciardo finishing sixth and lapped in his home race.

New Russian team mate Daniil Kvyat withdrew before the start with a gearbox failure.

"Whether they will, who knows?," Ecclestone added. "Dieter is a sporting guy and I don't think he'll stop because he's being beaten.

"He's more likely to stop if he was winning."
