F1 has turned up engine volume for 2015

As per the engine ‘freeze’ rules, 2014 manufacturers Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari have been allowed to upgrade their turbo V6s by a value of up to 48 per cent since the end of last season.

Still, the slight relaxing of the homologation rules – the so-called ‘unfreeze’ – continues to cause controversy.

After the 2014 suppliers found a loophole to keep upgrading their engines beyond the start of the forthcoming season, newcomer Honda pushed for the same right.

The FIA eventually compromised, allowing McLaren’s new works supplier to keep upgrading beyond Melbourne but only to the tune of the average amount of performance ‘tokens’ left over by its three rivals.

According to Auto Motor und Sport on Tuesday, however, Ron Dennis is not happy with that.

The German publication said the McLaren supremo in fact wants Honda to be allowed to use the highest number of tokens left over by Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari.

For instance, if Mercedes has 10 tokens left in Melbourne, Renault 8 and Ferrari 6, Dennis thinks Honda should be granted 10 tokens for 2015 rather than the average value, which in this case would be 8.

Correspondent Michael Schmidt said Dennis will raise the issue at the strategy group meeting in Paris on Thursday.

‘He will meet with resistance,’ said Schmidt, ‘especially from Ferrari.’

Meanwhile, those at the opening test at Jerez this week have noticed that the upgraded 2015-spec turbo V6s are definitely louder than last year’s.

Schmidt said: ‘And the tone is more like a racing engine than a lawn mower.’

Mercedes’ engine boss Andy Cowell said: ‘I don’t know why this is so, as we have definitely not done anything deliberate to make them louder.’
Some have speculated that the improved sound has been due to changes in exhaust length made solely for performance reasons.

Formula One was plunged into a storm of negative publicity at the beginning of last season when Bernie Ecclestone furiously criticized the quieter sound of the new generation of V6 turbo engines.

In Spain he convened a meeting of F1 race promoters during which they discussed “various aspects of Formula One the benefit of all fans who are concerned about maintaining the unique feeling of Formula One”.

This was clearly a reference to the debate over engine noise. The following week after that meeting, Mercedes tried – and rejected – a revised exhaust designed to make a louder noise. Nonetheless, the FIA have pledged to continue looking for louder alternatives.

The most controversial aspect of the new 'power unit' regulations, introduced last year, is their mild tone in comparison to the screaming V8 and V10s of the past.

Mario Illien, the famous F1 engine designer who is now working with Renault and Red Bull, has said that there are some possible solutions that could make the basic V6 layout louder.

He said the biggest problem is the way the engines' 'wastegate' is currently laid out.

"It does not blow into the atmosphere, but into the exhaust, which is very long and quite thick and the sound is lost," Illien said.

He said if another valve exits separately, "the sound that the engine makes would go directly to the outside and you'd hear it a lot better", Illien predicted.

He cautioned, however, that his solution would only produce more noise in certain 'phases' of the power unit operation, such as when the battery charge is full.

"In the race, the benefit would be less," he admitted.

Illien also said the current regulations prescribe the position of the wastegate, speculating: "The FIA was probably concerned it would (otherwise) be used for some aerodynamic tricks".

He also said a shorter exhaust would help, while the typical turbo whistle would be louder in F1 if a bi-turbo was introduced.

And Illien said that if the current maximum fuel-flow rate was increased, the sound of the engine would also be turned up.

Late December 2014, Renault’s F1 chief Cyril Abiteboul has announced a new collaboration with engine expert Mario Illien.

“It is great that Renault are now working with Ilmor,” said Christian Horner, the boss of Renault’s works team Red Bull, who in 2014 failed to win the title for the first time since 2009.

Renault faltered badly at the start of the all-new turbo V6 era in 2014, as Mercedes utterly dominated.

So it was significant that, as the 2014 season ended in Abu Dhabi, a notable VIP in the Red Bull garage was the multiple title-winning former Mercedes F1 designer Mario Illien.

“Ilmor is a strong company with extensive experience with simular engines used in other series,” Abiteboul told France’s Auto Hebdo.

He confirmed that Illien’s UK based company is now “performing some tasks” on behalf of the Renault F1 project.

“This is very useful in situations where it is necessary to analyse a set of solutions,” Abiteboul added.

Another key reason for the Illien alliance, he admitted, is that it is “not so easy to create such a very complex hybrid system in the centre of France”.

"We are not in the English 'Motorsport Valley', where in pubs every evening engineers from all over meet over a beer," he added.

Mercedes chiefs have admitted that F1 unexpectedly turned up the volume for 2015.

Last year, as the turbo ‘power units’ replaced the screaming normally-aspired engines of the past, the biggest controversy was the loss of volume.

But trackside observers at this week’s first 2015 test at Jerez unanimously agree that the new cars have definitely become louder over the winter.

“We have talked about this on the pitwall,” Mercedes’ engine chief Andy Cowell told Speed Week.

“We haven’t properly measured if the engines are really louder, as we only concentrate on making them faster.

“Maybe it’s because we haven’t heard one for a few months, and maybe it’s because of the amphitheater of Jerez, but to be honest, they do sound louder.”

Mercedes designer Aldo Costa agrees.

“A year ago I could stand in the box without ear protection, but now I’m covering my ears again.

“Of course it’s no comparison to the naturally-aspirated V8, but the sound of the new turbos is at least as good as that of the first turbo generation (in F1),” he added.

Remarkable is that Mario IIIien, in essence the father of the Merc is now helping out Renault. Though after testing it looks like it hasn't helped much. Good luck Ricciardo this year. I hope his driving can make up for it or Renault can pull a rabbit out of their hat with their 6 tokens.

Lets see more of that Ricciardo smile!
