Until a few weeks back it appeared Button and teammate Kevin Magnussen were a shoo-in to retain their seats for 2015 with the Woking outfit... then came Sebastian Vettel's shock revelation that he was to leave Red Bull.

Suddenly all bets were off, the driver market was in turmoil and Button, the sport's elder statesman, looks likely to be the most significant casualty.

The 34-year-old is awaiting word on whether he’ll return to McLaren next year, amid talks of Fernando Alonso joining the team in place of either Button or F1 rookie Kevin Magnussen.

Reports were made that Button could turn to the FIA WEC instead, following in the footsteps of Mark Webber, who made the switch to the growing sports car championship this year.

McLaren is the only big team in F1 that has yet to secure its driver lineup for next year.



According to the report, Button has already had talks with Porsche, which is known to be evaluating a potential third car for the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year.

The German manufacturer has yet to finalize its full-season lineup for 2015.
