CNN sign multi-year deal with McLaren F1 team
CNN International branding will appear on McLaren F1 cars next season

CNN International have agreed a multi-year deal to join the McLaren Formula One team as a partner, both sides said on Tuesday.

No financial details were given but for the 2015 season, the partnership sees CNN’s branding appear on the front-wing endplates of the new McLaren-Honda MP4-30 Formula 1 car, which will be unveiled in an online launch. It also allows for CNN’s use of McLaren’s soon-to-open thought leadership centre, based within the McLaren Technology Campus in Woking, Surrey, UK, from which CNN International will produce several programs to be broadcast globally across its network.

The partnership comes at an exciting time for both brands – CNN has again been named the world’s number one international news brand and has won a clutch of awards including News Channel of the Year for the past two years from the Royal Television Society; McLaren heads into the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship with a new car, a new engine partner and the best driver line-up in Formula 1: world champions Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

The dynamic nature of the deal means that both parties see the potential to amplify the scope and scale of the partnership in the years to come, in areas such as sharing expertise and resources, cross-marketing their brands, and utilizing networking and business relationships.

McLaren have yet to name a title sponsor and will unveil their MP4-30 car, to be driven by Spain's Fernando Alonso and Britain's Jenson Button this season.
The McLaren partnership, even if relatively small by Formula One standards, is a leap up the grid for CNN who most recently sponsored the Caterham team.
Caterham, who never scored a point in five years, went into administration last October and face an uncertain future.

"Our shared love of technology has united us: together we will pursue new opportunities far beyond the conventional scope of a Formula One partnership," said McLaren chief executive Ron Dennis in a statement.

McLaren, who are starting a new engine partnership with Honda, have not won a race since 2012.

In a natural fit for both CNN International and McLaren Technology Group, each company operates in a dynamic, dizzyingly fast environment where success is judged as much by speed of response as by continual innovation and quality of product.

McLaren has announced that it will unveil its new Honda-powered MP4/30 on January 29.

In a tweet they confirmed that its new design is to be revealed in the week leading up to the first pre-season test at the Circuito de Jerez.

The car will be driven by Fernando Alonso, who has switched from Ferrari, and Jenson Button, retained for what will be his sixth season at McLaren.

McLaren is the only team to confirm plans for a full car launch, although Force India will present its new livery in Mexico on January 21.

Mexico City's famous Soumaya Museum will play host to the event, which is due to be streamed online for fans to watch around the world.

Force India enjoyed its most successful Formula 1 season to date in 2014, racking up 155 points en route to sixth in the overall standings.
