Top teams and likely title challengers Mercedes and Ferrari will have to modify their cars ahead of the season opener in Melbourne.

That was the claim on Monday of Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, revealing that the solutions to mount the mandatory television cameras at the front of the respective cars are illegal.

Designers for the teams have shaped the nose-positioned camera mountings aerodynamically, but the FIA has ruled that they are longer than the allowed 15cm.

“FIA race director Charlie Whiting clarified the matter in a letter to the teams”, correspondent Michael Schmidt said, adding that Toro Rosso’s solution at Jerez was also deemed illegal.

“Toro Rosso has already responded and at the first Barcelona test the brackets were attached to the chassis horizontally,” Schmidt added.

Last year Red Bull caused controversy at the start of the year when they decided to be clever and innovative by making an aerodynamic move on their camera. The interaction of the cameras with the rest of the car,in particular, the inboard legs of the front suspension, is important –and Red Bull effectively removed that interaction by being resourceful and embedding the camera housing in the so called‘vanity’ panel region which is a relatively aero benign area.

But Red Bull had to finally abandon their camera mounts inside the nose cone after the FIA requested a modification. After the front facing view was found insufficient, Red Bull made a modification to the camera aperture in Spain, but ultimately had to abandon the entire layout.

Instead, by Monaco the RB10 featured traditional mountings with a curved connection between the black FOM camera hubs and the nose to be able to locate the cameras in their mandatory position.

Page 72 FIA Regulations state:

ARTICLE 20 : TELEVISION CAMERAS AND TIMING TRANSPONDERS
20.1
Presence of cameras and camera housings :
All cars must be fitted with at least five cameras or camera housings at all times throughout
the Event.

20.2
Location of camera housings :
Camera housings, when used, must be fitted in the same location as cameras. Details
concerning the size and weight of all camera housings may be found in the Appendix to
the Technical Regulations

20.3
Location and fitting of camera equipment :
20.3.1
All cars must be equipped with five positions in which cameras or camera housings can be
fitted. Referring to Drawing 6, all cars must carry (i) a camera in position 4 and (ii) a camera or
camera housing in positions 2 (both sides), 3 and either 1 or 5.

Any decision as to whether a camera or camera housing is fitted in those positions will be by
agreement between the relevant Competitor and the Commercial Rights Holder.

20.3.2
Any part provided by the Competitor for the purpose of aligning a camera or camera housing
in positions 2 or 3 correctly will be considered part of the camera or housing provided it is
being fitted for that sole purpose.

20.3.3
Any camera or camera housing fitted in positions 2, 3 or 4 shown in Drawing 6 must be mounted in order that its major axis does not subtend an angle greater than 1° to the reference plane.

20.3.4
When viewed from the side of the car, the entire camera or camera housing in position 2 shown in Drawing 6 must lie within a box formed by two
vertical lines 150mm and 450mm forward of the front wheel centre line and two horizontal lines 325mm and 525mm above the
reference plane.

Furthermore, the entire camera or camera housing in position 2 must be mounted more than 150mm from car centre line.
Any camera or camera housing fitted in the left hand position 2 shown in Drawing 6 must be
mounted in order that its major axis where passing through the centre of the camera lens (or
corresponding position for a camera housing) does not intersect any part
of the car lying forward of the camera or camera housing.

20.3.5
The camera fitted in position 4 shown in Drawing 6 must be mounted in order that its
forward-most point is no more than 80mm rearward of the rear face of the cockpit entry
template.

20.3.6
The camera fitted in position 3 shown in Drawing 6 must be mounted in order that the entire
camera or camera housing is between 675mm and 950mm above the reference plane and
more than 75mm from car centre line.

20.4
Transponders :
All cars must be fitted with two timing transponders supplied by the officially appointed
timekeepers. These transponders must be fitted in strict accordance with the instructions
detailed in the Appendix to the Technical Regulations.
Teams must use their best endeavours to ensure that the transponders are in working order at all times.

20.5
Installation :
Competitors must be notified of any changes to the camera or transponder installation
instructions before 30 June of the previous season.

Wow. And who said F1 is regulating itself to death? I hear there is a big controversy brewing over in car urine collection strategy. There has been no reg as of yet, but the teams have by and large all standardized on the Sneaky Leaker technology. Rumours abound however that Force India will be fielding The Urin-Ator this year, which supposedly brings some aero and weight advantages. I anxiously await the outcome of this controversy. Given Charlie and Bernies age, there is speculation that the new reg might go the way of the Undergarmet, adult, disposable.

The cameras are often mounted illegally for testing so the teams can get a better look at various parts of the car they have interest in at speed. Seems almost every year someone is whining about somebody else's cameras but nobody will chance being DQ'd on race day. .

Lets see more of that Ricciardo smile!
